Flying with a young child: Packing tips

As we continue our discussion about flying with a young child, here are some things to consider, regarding packing:

**Start with a list of what to pack, focusing on items you need. Include your airline tickets/confirmation, IDs, insurance cards, baby’s birth certificate/shot record and, if you’re traveling abroad, passports.

**Try to keep items to a minimum. Determine how many outfits you’ll need by how many days you’ll be at your destination. If baby generally only wears one outfit per day, pack one per day for vacation – plus one extra for your entire stay. Consider outfits for special dinners or events as separate, and try to choose outfits for which your child can wear the same pair of shoes. (If you’re worried about not having enough clothes, pack a travel-sized container of laundry detergent. If you’re staying with someone, chances are they won’t mind if you pop a load of laundry in the wash. And if you’re staying in a hotel, you can hand wash items in your room, if you absolutely needed to.)

**Pack two or three bibs that are vinyl or another material that can be wiped off easily and reused.

**If baby uses bottles or sippy cups, take just a couple and wash them at your destination. Don’t forget the infant/toddler utensils as well. If you’re staying in a hotel, pack a travel-sized container of dish soap so you can wash items in your hotel room.

**Plan baby’s sleeping arrangements early. Many hotels offer cribs, but call ahead in case you need to reserve it in advance. If you must take baby’s bedding with you, look for lightweight options. If you’re flying, remember that a portable crib or play yard will count as one of your checked bags, and you’ll want to make sure it’s packed in a durable travel bag. Some are small enough that you can fit them into a large suitcase, and then pack other items around it. (Check with your airline for the weight limit on baggage.)

**If you’re taking your own bedding, don’t forget sheets and blankets.

**If you can, buy things like diapers, wipes and food when you arrive at your destination, packing in your carry-on bag only what you’ll need for the trip there. If that’s not an option, pack one diaper for every two to three hours during the day and however many you generally use at night. Consider travel packs or refill packs of wipes that don’t have hard plastic cases so they‘re lighter and take up less room.

**Make sure you pack extra diapers, wipes, food – even a change of clothes and medications for you and baby – in your carry-on bag in case of delays.

We’ll cover some general ideas for entertaining your little person along the way later in the week. And, for more information, you can find a travel checklist on WellPreparedMommy.com.

Flying with a young child: General tips

The “Back to School’ sales popping up remind me that summer vacation is starting to wind down for families everywhere. For those of you still planning to squeeze in a trip before school starts, we’ll focus this week on tips for traveling with very young children.

If you’re traveling for the first time with a little one, don’t sweat it too much. Sure, it’s more work than traveling alone or with just your spouse or partner, but with a little bit of prep work, it’s definitely manageable.

If you are planning a trip in the next month or so, I’m guessing you’ve probably chosen a destination already. So, we’ll focus on actually getting ready for that trip.

Today’s entry focuses on some things to consider when flying:

**If you don‘t yet have your tickets purchased, think carefully about the time of day (or night) you wish to fly. Some folks will tell you to fly during your child’s nap time so they’ll sleep for the flight. However, if your kids are like mine – and don’t sleep very well in public places – that might not be the best advice. My husband and I learned that early on and would try to avoid flying at nap time when possible.

**Many airlines will allow children under the age of two to fly for free – if they’re sitting in your lap. This is a great savings; however, depending on the length of the flight (or your child‘s willingness to sit unbuckled in your lap), you might want to consider purchasing a ticket for another seat. (Always, check with the airline ahead of time regarding children’s fares and what identification you need to bring with you.)

**If you have a newborn, check with the airline to see if there are any age restrictions. For some airlines, you will need physician approval to fly with babies who are only days old.

**To make getting around the airport easier, bring your stroller – or some other baby carrier if your child is small enough still. You’ll need your hands free from time to time, and strollers can also be used as highchairs if necessary. Generally, you can check your stroller at the gate. It never hurts to check with the airline though to see what kinds of equipment (e.g., infant carriers, strollers, etc.) you can carry on or check at the gate.

**If you’re renting a car at your destination, you might consider contacting the rental company to see if they loan car seats. If you take your own and plan to check it, make sure it’s packed in a durable travel bag. Check with your airline ahead of time; some airlines don’t count your child’s car seat as one of your checked bags.

**Most airlines will allow pre-boarding for families with children, but you don’t have to get on early if you don’t want to. Some parents view pre-boarding as a good opportunity to get settled in the plane before everyone else; others see it as more time to sit confined with baby.

**Once you do board, ask a flight attendant for a blanket. If you have to change your baby on the plane, you can use the blanket to cover the toilet to create a changing table in the lavatory. While some planes do have changing tables, they’re generally pretty small.

**You may consider feeding baby during takeoff to relieve pressure in the ears. (A pacifier may help too. If you don’t generally use one, you could try one just for the occasion but don’t be surprised if baby rejects it.) For older kids, try lollipops.

There’s plenty more to consider, including some tips on keeping your child entertained on a flight and packing in general, so be sure to check the blog later in the week. We’ll also take a look at some things to consider for road trips.

Is there a Well-Prepared Mommy book in the future?

That’s certainly the hope. I’m excited to share with you that I am very close to finishing a proposal for just that, and with some hard work – and maybe a little luck – it just might happen. Within the next month, I anticipate being ready to search for an agent and shop my idea around.

My goal is to offer moms-to-be a book to help them prepare for so many of the ways that having a baby can affect them beyond the medical and health impacts. I hope you’ll follow me as I begin this journey.

In addition to providing you with updates on my progress, I’ll be looking for your feedback on various topics. I hope we’ll have some great conversations!

With the proposal nearly complete, I’ll have more “free time,” which really means hours after my kids have gone to bed, or early morning hours before they’ve gotten up – but not too late or too early because I really need my sleep :) Anyway, I plan to put this “free time” toward doing more with WellPreparedMommy.com and other social media avenues, including YouTube. Yes, very soon, you’ll see my lovely mug in video. You’ll notice a little change with the blog too. While I will continue to share stories of my own family from time to time, I’ll focus on providing even stronger content with more practical advice.

Thank you for being here. If you’re not already a friend on Facebook, please join us. And if you are, please suggest the page to other moms you know. It’s really easy. Just go to www.Facebook.com/wellpreparedmommy and click on “Suggest to Friends” on the left side under the profile picture.

The nurse is in…

Share

We went months without anyone in our home being sick, and then, we hit a rough patch.

Visited a CVS Minute Clinic over the weekend. Guess my Girly didn’t want a long holiday weekend to slip by without getting sick. On our way to the Fourth of July parade on Saturday (the third), we noticed she had a fever. Now, normally we might not rush to the doctor with such a low fever; it was only 99.5. But given that it was the weekend and last time she started out with a low-grade fever (Memorial Day weekend), she ended up having ear and eye infections. So off we went. Checked out the Minute Clinic, hoping it would be quicker than the urgent care we’ve gone to in the past when our doctor’s office is closed. It was.

The nurse was super friendly too… and apparently, Girly felt pretty comfortable with her because she opened her little mouth as wide as she could and stuck out her tongue when it was time to check her throat.

The nurse took a throat culture to test for strep. Eek. Girly did not like that however – and may not be so willing to open her mouth for the nurse in the future. The strep test was negative. No ear infections. The nurse said it was probably just a cold. Maybe a sinus infection.

We accepted that and went on about our merry way. Girly still had the fever for a couple more days, but overall was happy and didn’t really appear sick.

On Monday, I did call our pediatrician’s office. The nurse there basically told me, because the fever was so low, “yeh, we don’t really consider that a fever.” She didn’t see any need for us to come in.
Alrighty then.

We waited it out. Today, the fever was gone. Hopefully, it will be tomorrow. But we’ve been fooled before.

More from the Wedding Day

Share

Yesterday’s blog focused a lot on the Girly and what she did during the wedding so I thought I would just update you on my little guy.

As I mentioned already, he walked down the aisle wonderfully. Holding the hand of his cousin, he was perfectly content. Once down the aisle, he came over to me as instructed. My sister had placed golf tees in the grass where she wanted all the bridesmaids to stand. Well, guess who spotted those shortly after the wedding started? And he was so excited about it!

He bent down, picked up the one that I was standing by and excitedly said – probably a little louder than was necessary – “Look, Mom! A golf tee!”

He then spotted the one that my older sister, who was next to me, was standing on. He grabbed it too and again, proudly displayed it. I bent down, whispered in his ear to settle down, which he did.

And then about a minute later, guess who needed to go potty?! He grabbed himself, turned around and looked up quite earnestly and said, “Mommy, I need to go potty.”

I, in return, offered, “Well… you can’t.”

For a brief moment, I thought, “OMG, he’s going to pitch a fit right in the middle of the wedding and I’m going to end up having to take him away.”

But, he simply turned around and said not another peep. As soon as the ceremony was over and everyone made their way down the aisle though, he bolted for the restroom.

The rest of the night, he went full force. He ate his dinner, sucked down a couple glasses of lemonade (a rare treat) and then kept busy all night – dancing and mostly hanging out with his uncle. Oh! And, of course, he had cake.

Wedding Day

Share

The wedding day started with a nice breakfast with the girls. The fellas were on their own. So Girly and I headed out with my sisters to chow down while the little guy stayed behind to talk Daddy and Grandpa’s ears off, no doubt.

On the way back from breakfast, which was fairly late in the morning, Girly took a bit of a nap in the car. Phew! Because there was no doubt that she was going to need a snooze to get through the rest of the day.

Pictures started around 3:30. The wedding wasn’t until 6. And, as I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, it was all outside. In South Carolina. Temps: 90+ with a lot of humidity.

We got ready early in the afternoon. The little guy was a breeze. Thankfully, he was allowed to wear shorts and a nice white shirt. Girly had a beautiful white dress with sash that matched the junior bridesmaid dress. I tried putting some wave in her hair, but it didn’t stay. As you can see from the picture below, she was a sweaty little mess by the end of the night.

But how did they do, you ask? Well, here’s the thing. Shortly before the wedding, Girly declared that she didn’t want to walk down the aisle with her brother, and I know her well enough not to push. Fortunately, the bride happens to teach young kids and also knows they have limits. She said to let her do whatever she wanted. I asked Girly if she would walk with me and she agreed. So, I walked down the aisle flanked by my brother (a groomsmen) on one side and Girly on the other. The little guy then walked down with my niece, the junior bridesmaid. No harm. No foul.

Then, once we got into position, Girly headed for the little walkway behind where we were standing, sat down and proceeded to take her shoes off – and clean the bottoms of her feet! Yes, the picture here is what she was actually doing during the wedding. Spread eagle on the ground, she wiped and wiped her little tootsies until the ceremony was over. I whispered to my son as we were preparing to walk out to go get her. He did and she, my son and niece all walked back out together. My daughter – barefoot, of course.

Will they? Won’t they?

Share

My girly’s hives cleared up before my sister’s wedding. If you recall, she had broken out in a bad case – apparently, she’s allergic to amoxicillin (and therefore penicillin).

But thankfully, they went away about a week before the big event. Phew! We cleared that hurdle; our next big issue was whether or not she would actually walk down the aisle as the flower girl. Her brother was the ring bearer and I thought if the two of them were paired together that they might be okay.

So, there we were. In South Carolina. Rehearsing for an outdoor wedding. In 90-degree temps. I’m sweating just thinking about it.

We had talked about the wedding with both kids beforehand. We explained, especially, to our five-year-old what an important event it was and how much his aunt would appreciate him walking well down the aisle. And we explained to our two-year-old how much we wanted her to walk with her brother down the aisle. They acknowledged that they at least heard us. That was good.

But would they do it? The question of the day.

Despite the heat, which made everyone a little more irritable than normal, rehearsal went well. The kids did just as told. As cute as can be, Girly took her brother’s arm and walked down the aisle. Yippee, I thought! I breathed a little sigh of relief.

What about the wedding though? Would we see the same performance? Stay tuned…

The new “Are we there yet?”

We drove down to South Carolina last weekend for my younger sister’s wedding. It’s a pretty lengthy road trip so we decided to break up the drive, stopping after about six hours in Tennessee. Before we left, my husband told our five-year-old not to ask, “Are we there yet?” So he didn’t. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t ask SOMETHING. Below chronicles some of the “highlights” of our journey from Ohio to Tennessee. (Unless it states otherwise, the comments are from my son.)

We left the house shortly after 8 a.m.

Just 12 miles into the drive, the little guy asks, “Where are we?” Dad responds, “South Carolina.” The little guy, “Seriously?”

Mile 22: “Where are we?”

Mile 28: “Where are we?”

About 8:45 a.m, Girly launches into a “yeah, Mommy” chant that lasts for about two minutes

Mile 47: “Now, where are we?”

Mile 76: (Sees a hotel) “Is that the hotel we’re staying in?”

Mile 108: “Where ARE we?”

Mile 116: “When are we there?”

Mile 117: “Where are we?”

Mile 130: “Where are we? South Carolina? Are we almost to our hotel?

Mile 157: “Where are we now, Dadda?” Dad: “Kentucky.” Little guy: “There sure are a lot of Kentuckies.”

Mile 165: (Pulling off highway for a break.) “Where are we? At our hotel?”

Mile 189: “WHEN are we at the hotel?”

Mile 244: “When are we going to be at the hotel?”

Mile 246: “Where are we?”

Mile 300: “When are we at the hotel?”

Mile 309: When are we at THIS hotel?”

Mile 315: “When are we at our hotel?”

Mile 319: “When are we there?”

We rolled into the hotel a short while later. But to his credit, he never asked, “Are we there yet?”

(More on the wedding coming soon…)

Dress up time

If you follow my blog, you know I like things to be efficient. So when I was introduced recently to Shabby Apple, I was definitely intrigued. The online boutique says it offers “great dresses that make dressing simple.” Sign me up!

It didn’t take more than a glance at the site for me to agree that the dresses look pretty great. They even have maternity dresses! But, alas, I didn’t need any of those so I tried the Tuxedo III dress from Shabby Apple. A nice summery dress. In beautiful chocolate.

The store prides itself on offering dresses that don’t require you to wear anything else with them – like a tank top underneath or a cardigan over it. True to its word, I didn’t need anything with it. Me like. Finding a dress is hard enough sometimes. To have to find a matching tank or cardigan or worse – a slip to go underneath! – exhausts me.

Beyond the gorgeous women’s dresses, the boutique also sells adorable dresses for girls. Preteen and younger. So cute!

What I also like is that the site offers a fit guide and notes on the dress descriptions to tell you if something fits a little big or small for whatever reason – brand, fabric, something like that. It’s like they’re really trying to make things easy for me – and that I can appreciate.

Penicillin allergic

Share

Well, it’s official. My girly is “penicillin allergic.” Sigh. No amoxicillin. No penicillin. Ever. And if there are other “cillins,” it probably includes those too.

You might recall earlier this year that she broke out into a crazy case of hives. At the time, the doctor said it could very well be Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria, which simply put just means hives. But, the other theory was that she could be allergic to the antibiotic she was on for an ear infection. Bingo.

Memorial Day weekend, we had to take the little one to a children’s urgent care (a Nationwide Children’s Hospital Close to Home Center), where we learned she had an ear infection and an eye infection. For her eye, we got eye drops, and for her ear, we got a prescription for amoxicillin.

Her eighth day on it, she broke out into a bad case of the hives. We stopped the medicine, took her to the doctor and she was officially diagnosed as allergic.

You might not be able to tell from the pic, but it’s really bad. In January, they lasted for several weeks. Am really hoping for a quicker recovery this time – or we’re going to have one spotted flower girl in my sister’s wedding later this month!
