When it comes time to register for baby gifts, you may question what you really need. Over the next few blogs or so, we’ll take a look at “must haves” vs. “nice to haves.”
The registry checklist posted on WellPreparedMommy.com is intended as a guideline. While it primarily focuses on “must haves,” it does include a few “nice to haves” as well. Unlike a checklist you might find at stores that offer registries, the Well-Prepared Mommy checklist does not include everything under the sun. But then again, I’m not trying to sell you anything.
Let’s start in the nursery. Baby has to have somewhere to sleep. Whether or not you register for baby’s bed or just buy it yourself is up to you. Consider your circle of friends and family. If you have someone – parents or in-laws maybe – who might want to purchase such a gift, then add it to the list.
If you have a decent-sized room dedicated as the nursery, you’ll probably want a standard crib. So you’ll need:
* A crib
* A mattress
* Mattress covers
* Sheets
* Blankets that can be used to swaddle baby
If you live in really tight quarters or just want a second bed for baby in a different location of the house, consider a cradle, bassinet or portable crib (play yard or travel yard). If you go this route, don’t forget a mattress and sheets.
For the sake of making life easier and keeping baby’s room organized, I consider these next items as “must haves” as well:
* Dresser
* Changing table
* Changing pad and covers
* Crib mobile (Avoid mobiles that require winding. You want something that can go non-stop if necessary.)
* Baskets/storage bins (Use baskets in different sizes to hold socks, toys, etc. Use storage bins in the closet or under the crib to keep clothing that is too big until you’re ready for it or to hold items that are too small until you donate them, sell them or use them again.)
* Diaper stacker/basket
* Hamper
In the “nice to have” category:
* A bedding set with a matching quilt and bumper. It’s considered unsafe for infants to sleep with blankets, and the use of bumpers is even debatable so these aren’t necessarily things you need. Many moms choose to register for bedding sets because they help make the nursery look pretty.
* A glider/rocker and ottoman
Next, we’ll take a look at some of the clothing/layette items that should be on your registry.
